SEUR's commitment to urban microhubs

chosen as one of the "Best Ideas of the Year"

  • The 40th edition of the "Actualidad Económica" Awards has highlighted SEUR's commitment to sustainable urban distribution in the last mile
  • SEUR's award-winning initiative consists of investing in small logistics centres in town centres, bringing them closer to recipients and thus reducing distribution distances and minimising CO2 emissions

Madrid, 22nd May 2018 - The 40th edition of "Actualidad Económica's Best Ideas of the Year" Awards has recognised SEUR's initiative of investing in urban microhubs as the ideal formula to sustainability meet last mile distribution requirements.

According to Juan Pérez de Lema, Operations Director of SEUR, who collected the prize in person, "At SEUR we have opted for developing sustainable urban logistics solutions such as urban microhubs, which bring us closer to our customers and allow us to use sustainable delivery methods like ecological vehicles, bicycles and foot couriers. This means we are able to meet the challenge of last mile distribution, driven by the growth in e-commerce that has brought a significant increase in volumes in town centres, where, at the same time, traffic restrictions are becoming ever more prevalent".

"These hubs will also be able to meet the extremely urgent requirements of electronic commerce. Since they are located in town centres, these centres allow us to make faster deliveries (in one or two hours with SEUR Now) and also minimise CO2 emissions in the last mile", Juan Pérez de Lema goes on to say.

SEUR's investment plan in these hubs proposes opening 14 centres over the course of this year. Five of them will be in Madrid, and the rest in cities such as Seville, Valencia, Barcelona or Bilbao. They will all be located in areas with a high population density, and, in some cases, SEUR will rely on its Pickup convenience network, which currently has 1,400 distribution points throughout Spain.

SEUR has successfully trialled this formula in the town of Las Tablas in Madrid. This district is, along with San Chinarro, the postcode area with the highest penetration of e-commerce in Spain, due to it having a large population of young married couples with medium or medium-high purchasing power, combined with the fact that they are areas with few high street shops. Last November, the company opened a microhub to carry out last mile distribution. SEUR makes more than 1,000 deliveries per day from this centre.
